The Kona French press is a glass carafe (extra thick borosilicate) with the protective plastic outer shell that wraps around it. The plastic look is cheaper than the stainless-steel look, but on closer inspection, you’ll find the BPA-free plastic to actually be of a great quality like the Bodum travel French press. Furthermore, the plastic components don’t come into contact with the coffee at any point.

Sump Coffee’s Scott Carey told us it’s easy to figure out a decent ratio of grounds to water by eyeballing the amounts you use in one brew and then adjusting those levels if you find the coffee to be too weak or too astringent. Once you discover a ratio you like, take note of approximately how many scoops of grounds you used and how high you filled the press so you can replicate that combo in future brews.

This is the same type of glass used to create bakeware that can withstand oven temperatures of 450 degrees or higher. Unlike regular glass, borosilicate consists at least 5% of a compound called boric oxide. When putting together with silica and boron trioxide, this glass becomes extremely resistant to thermal shock. In non-science and geeky words: your carafe will not explode into hundreds of tiny pieces when you pour hot water inside. It will, however, break should you drop it on a hard surface.
When you picture a French press, you’re probably picturing something with metal scaffolding and a glass carafe. That’s the standard style of French press, and as such, is often the least expensive and most readily available. This is why a glass French press is a solid choice for beginners, or anyone who doesn’t want to spend too much money on a coffee maker.
The Brazil’s lid has a less-than-snug fit on the top of the beaker and can wiggle if you jostle it, but it still traps heat in the pot long enough for you to brew and pour. Freeing the beaker from its snug-fitting plastic shell to clean in between the two is also more difficult, requiring more wiggling than the Chambord’s shell. But you won’t need to clean the inside of the plastic too often.
The Kona French press has a borosilicate glass carafe with a plastic outer shell. The outer shell offers some mechanical protection to the glass, and it also boosts the unit’s aesthetic appeal. But, we think Kona added the outer shell to compensate for the shatter-prone glass carafe. Overall, the quality of the parts leans towards the cheaper side.

The press should also be sturdy enough to handle daily plunging and cleaning with ease. Presses with a glass beaker should have an exterior that will cushion and protect it from bumps and drops. Here’s what we do know. Coffee made without a paper filter does contain substances called cafestol and kahweol. Glass French Presses: Glass carafes are gorgeous because you can watch the coffee brew and see the grounds go down as you plunge. They are more fragile, of course, so you should get one that's made out of borosilicate glass to avoid thermal shock and breakage. Most glass French Presses also have plastic or metal braces for added protection. Having a sturdy base is important, too.
For each brewer, we took into consideration its quality of material and build and its look and feel. We paid particularly close attention to the propensity of the filter to allow potentially flavor-dampening silt to pass into the cup. We concentrated on how easy or difficult the unit was to clean, including the disassembly and reassembly of its filter system.

Stainless Steel French Presses: A double-walled design is key for stainless steel French Presses. Two walls will help keep the heat in and make for a better brew. You should also check for the quality of the stainless steel — 18/8 and 18/10 ratios of chromium to nickel are best. Stainless steel carafes are more durable, but you miss out on the fun visual element of glass French Presses.
